Q: 「石橋を叩いて渡る」
A: “Look before you leap.”
Look before you leap. 「石橋を叩いて渡る」
(saying) used to advise somebody to think about the possible results
or dangers of something before doing it

“Look before you leap.”を直訳すると、
「跳ぶ前に見よ」という意味になりますが、
つまり、「行動を起こすには、用心の上に用心を重ねて行うべきである」
ということから、
日本のことわざの「石橋を叩いて渡る」と同様の意味合いになります。
また、「転ばぬ先の杖」「念には念を入れよ」も、ほぼ同じ意味になりますね。
これと反対の意味で、“He who hesitates is lost.”という表現があります。

これは、「躊躇する者は好機を逃がす」ということから、
「思い立ったが吉日」とほぼ同様の意味になりますね。
また、“leap”を名詞として用いた表現で、
“a leap in the dark”＝“a leap into the unknown”
「向こう見ずな行動、暴挙」という表現もあります。
