“in the middle of ～”には、
「～の途中で、～の最中に」という意味があります。
ですから、“I’m in the middle of something.”を直訳すると、
「私は何かの最中です」⇒「何かの最中で忙しい」という意味になり、そこから、
「いま手が離せないんだ」「いま取り込み中なんだ」
「いまちょっと都合が悪いんだ」などという意味になります。
具体的に何をしていて忙しいと言いたくない場合でも、
“I’m in the middle of something.”と言えば、
「いま忙しいから、後にして」ということを伝えられるので
便利な表現ですよね＾＾
逆に、具体的に何をしていて忙しいと言いたい場合には、“something”の部分に、
名詞や動名詞を入れればよいので、いろいろと応用がききますね。
“I’m in the middle of a meeting.”「いま会議の最中なんです」
“I’m in the middle of cooking dinner.”「いま夕食を作っている最中なの」
“Sorry, I’m in the middle of something. I’ll call you back.”
「ごめん。いま手が離せないんだ。後でかけ直すよ」
